Junior and Senior high school students all over the place have many decisions to make when it comes to furthering their education. Unfortunately, everyone will not be accepted into their first choice. However, if you want to increase your chances of getting into your first choice, consider the following Illinois college tips:

As a student, your grades must meet the requirements of the college you wish to attend. This means keeping your grades up, even if it means extra tutoring sessions and staying after school everyday. Those who have proven they can meet the demands of college will be the ones who get accepted.

You must also understand that you are more than your grades. Of all the Illinois college tips you will read or hear about, you must realize that the well-rounded students are the ones who get accepted first. Get involved with high school activities and you will find yourself attending the college you placed as your first choice.

College will also place a lot of emphasis on your ACT or SAT scores. To make sure that your scores are more than adequate, consider taking an SAT or ACT prep course. Even if your time is limited, you will be able to find online classes that will help you prepare.

One of the Illinois college tips that you will hear a lot about has to do with the application process. When filling out your applications for colleges, have someone else proofread what you have written. The worst mistake you can make is sending in an application that is filled with spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.

Also, be sure that your applications are written in legible handwriting. If your handwriting is not the easiest to read, make sure that every application you send has been typed and is free of typos.

As a college education can be a large expense, do not forget to fill out college financial aid forms and apply for as many college scholarships as you can. This will help to ensure that your education will be more affordable.

Any student is wishes to attend college may find the financial aspect is a little overwhelming. The expenses of a good education are extremely high and this eliminates many students from the process. If you are a student who may not be able to afford college, don’t give up. There are many different ways to pursue your education, including applying for a scholarship. However, be sure to watch out for the worst mistakes you can make when applying for college scholarships.

One of the most common mistakes made on applications for college scholarships are leaving blank spaces. The scholarship committee puts each and every question on the form for a reason. If one of the questions does not apply to you, it is best to write “no applicable” in the space than to leave it blank. Blank spaces are considered unfinished.

Another mistake you can make is to send in a sloppy and illegible application. If the reviewer can not read it, they are simply going to disqualify you for the scholarship. To remove any doubt of whether or not your writing can be read easily, type the applications yourself. If this is not possible, take the time to make sure your writing is clear and precise.

Along with legible writing, you must also make certain that your application are free from any spelling mistakes or grammatical issues. An application with many mistakes is going to be dismissed. It is crucial to have someone else review anything before you send it out. This is your chance to stand out above the rest of the applicants and if your application is free from errors, you will stand a much better chance of winning the scholarship.

The worst mistake of all, however, is only applying for one or two scholarships at a time. Any student who must secure financing for their education must realize that it is a game of numbers. The more college scholarships you apply for and the more you may win. Do the research with your guidance counselor, as well as on the Internet, to find out how many scholarships you may qualify for and apply for as many as possible.

The economy of today is making it tough for many individuals and even more so for those parent’s who have students that wish to go to college. Many students and parents have actually given up on their educational dreams, believing there is no way they can afford it. However, there are many ways to help your child get the education they deserve. The following are some tips on helping your student to secure college financial aid so they can attend the college of their choice:

The first thing you should do is encourage your child to be well-rounded in high school. Their grades should be the best they can be and they should also make certain they have a wide array of activities to put on their applications.

Apply for a Federal college financial aid program by filling out the Free Application Form Student Aid, also known as the FAFSA. This is a program to help those students who deserve an education, but lack the finances they need to attend.

Encourage your student to apply for as many scholarships they qualify for. Many students often do not apply to many of them due to their fear of failure. Let your child know that the best way to secure scholarships for themselves is to apply for more.

Keep in contact with your child’s high school guidance counselor. They can help to keep you updated on any new programs or scholarships that may become available.

Do your research online. Many scholarships and programs can be applied for online. Along with these, you and your child can also research the various schools your child may be interested in attending.

Always be aware of the deadlines and process for each application being filled out. The best way to keep of all of the paperwork organized is to keep a notebook and calendar specifically for the task of securing college financial aid.

You live in Illinois and you’ve always dreamed of going to college, but the reality of leaving home leaves you as cold as Lake Michigan in January. It may be that a two-year college might be a better choice for you.

Illinois has a huge variety of two-year schools that might fill precisely what you need and want. Illinois has 49 community colleges serving 40 districts, so chances are there’s a college within commuting distance to you. In fact, Illinois is the home of the first two-year college established in this country. The first public junior college in the United States was established in 1901 in Joliet

When should you go to a community college?

—You’re not ready to leave home. For many students, the thought of leaving home is scary. If you feel this way, you’re not alone. For a variety of reasons, thousands of students choose community colleges to stay close to family and friends. If you’re not ready now, maybe you will be a two years and then can rethink your decision and go on to a four-year college.

—You’re not sure what you want to major in. If you make a mistake at a four-year college and major in something you realize you hate, it can be an expensive mistake. Community colleges are far less expensive than four-year colleges, giving students a chance to “try out” a major without going to the poor house.

—You don’t have the grades. Community colleges are easier to get into for students with less than stellar grades. If you want to go on to college, you can prove yourself in a community college by getting good grades there. Then, a four-year school will know you are capable of getting good grades and are committed to your education.

—You don’t have the money. Though there are many loan, grant and scholarship programs available, some students simply don’t want to take out a loan that they’ll spend years re-paying. Four-year colleges are expensive. The average public college costs more than $12,000 per year. That’s a scary number, especially if you do not qualify for grants or scholarships.

—You want to enter the work force ASAP. Community colleges and technical schools often offer practical degrees that can get you into the workforce quickly. They also offer students flexible class times allowing them to work while they attend school.

—Community colleges and technical schools offer a wide variety of programs to choose from and that also get you into the workforce quickly. In addition, Illinois has some of the best two-year arts schools in the country, including the Harrington Institute of Interior Design, and two locations for the Illinois Institute of Art.

If you feel you’re not ready for a four-year school for whatever reason, a two-year college may be the perfect answer.

Parents with college bound students are often overwhelmed by all that goes into finding ways to pay for college, which is why so many Illinois residents are exploring the benefits of hiring a college planner.

A good college planner will review your finances, find out what colleges are the best matches for your child, and explore the myriad ways you can pay for tuition. But does a parent really need to hire a professional to find out this information? Actually, no. But having a professional who knows precisely what funding is available, who is a dedicated professional, who can spend the time exploring your options, may be the best bet for you. Paying for college tuition is getting more and more difficult, and weeding through all your options extremely frustrating and time consuming. A college planner will help find the college that best meets the needs of your child and then will explore the best ways for you to pay for it.

The number of certified planners continues to grow and for a good reason: there’s a need for them. If you have a child who is heading to college soon, here are some things you should consider when deciding whether to hire a college planner.

—While high school counselors do their best to give students help and direction when planning for college, they simply do not have the time to dedicate to your child to give them all the options available to them. To get the most complete information, it’s probably best to hire a certified college planner whose job is to help you save money on college expenses.

—You could probably find most of the information you need online—if you worked at it full time. Most parents and students simply cannot dedicate the amount of time needed to explore all their options for paying for college. A planner knows at their fingertips what’s available, what your child can qualify for, and knows the latest changes in financial aid funding sources.

—While spending money to hire someone may seem counter-intuitive to a parent trying to save money, it’s not. A good college planner will save more than enough money in tuition costs to pay for their fee. Planners differ in not only what they charge but how. Some planners charge by the hour and others charge for packages. A higher price tag doesn’t necessarily mean a better planner. It’s always a good idea to talk to parents and students who have used a planner before making a decision.

—College planners go through a certification process, so make certain your college planner has one. They should also be more than willing to give you several references. Good planners look at the whole family financial picture, and develop a four-year plan with you.

In the end, whether you hire a college planner is a personal decision, but it could be one of the best cost-saving measures you’ll make if you do.

Many middle and upper middle class families believe they are caught between a rock and a hard place when it comes to paying for college and obtaining financial aid.

The vast majority of people simply do not have the nearly $100,000 it costs today for a four-year college degree, so they must look elsewhere to help fund college. And yet, they believe they earn too much money to obtain financial aid.
Put the brakes on, though, because your family may qualify for more than you think.

Eligibility for federal aid for college is based on a complicated alphabet-soup formula that takes into consideration your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), the Cost of Attendance (COA), and the student’s finances.

To qualify for any federal program, students must apply fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Without that, you will not be eligible for any federal loans or grants. Even if you believe your family income is too high to obtain some federal aid, it doesn’t hurt to apply, and you may be eligible for other programs you’re not aware of.

Currently, the Congress is looking at changing the student federal aid program through a contentious bill now languishing in the Senate. The bill, called the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act (SAFRA) would replace the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFEL). The goal of the new bill is to make college more affordable to more students.
Basically, the bill would create an $80 billion cost savings by stopping federal subsidies for private lenders who make student loans.

SAFRA would also increase the amount of Pell Grants from its current $5350 level to $6,900 in 2019. It all sounds good, but the bill has opposition from those politicians who claim the bill is only a government take-over and the cost-savings claimed by the bill’s supporters are unrealistic.

In the meantime, families who do not qualify for outright grants can apply for federal loans through FFEL. These loans don’t always pay for college, but often offer better terms than loans obtained directly through private lenders. The federal government also offers low-interest loans for families to cover the difference between tuition costs and the amount of the student loan.

The maximum loan given through the federal program is $10,500 per year for undergraduates and $20,500 per year for graduate programs, which, as most people who are planning for college know, won’t pay for all costs. The average college cost per year in 2009 was about $30,000 per year for private colleges, and $12,000 at four-year public schools.

The skyrocketing cost of college is front and center, in politics and family life, so expect some changes in the near future that will hopefully benefit families sending children to college.
